About this Event
As part of Academic Freedom Week 2026, the Universität der Künste Berlin and the Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, in cooperation with the Institut français Berlin, invite you to a film screening followed by a discussion.
In the context of increasing geopolitical tensions and the rise of repressive systems, fundamental values such as academic freedom and the hosting of at-risk scholars and artists are coming under growing pressure worldwide — including in Europe. The Scholars at Risk Report 2025 and recent data from the Academic Freedom Index (AFi) show a significant global decline in academic freedom in recent years.
For this reason, Academic Freedom Week 2026 focuses on the themes of protection and (re)construction. Particular attention is given to the complex life paths of scholars and artists who have been forced to leave their home countries due to war, persecution, or political pressure and who are attempting to rebuild their lives in new social contexts. At the same time, strategies and initiatives that aim to strengthen and protect academic freedom at both regional and international levels will be discussed. Through events in Berlin and Brandenburg as well as collaborations with European academic and cultural actors, the programme fosters dialogue on academic freedom within and beyond academic communities.
The main organisers are the universities of the Scholars at Risk Berlin-Brandenburg network and the Berlin University Alliance. Over the past ten years, participating universities have hosted numerous at-risk scholars and artists. In 2023, they founded a regional Scholars at Risk Section to pool resources and expertise and to further expand support structures.

Alfyia, a spirited young woman in Central Asia in the 1960s, spends her days skydiving and studying midwifery when she receives an extraordinary phone call from the future. Her granddaughter calls from the year 2022, worried about her grandmother’s safety in the context of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. In this intergenerational dialogue across time and space, the granddaughter attempts to rethink family memories, question her own identity, and break the cycle of collective trauma.
The Non-Monument
Short film, 13 min
Director: Yara Saleh
The film explores the paradoxes of memory culture in the context of the ongoing conflict in Syria. It shows how state-erected monuments can reinforce political narratives while simultaneously obscuring other memories. The Non-Monument raises the question of how traumatic events can be documented and remembered while conflicts are still ongoing and no clear historical distance is yet possible.
The event takes place at Cinema Paris, Kurfürstendamm 211, Berlin.
The films will be screened in their original versions with English subtitles, and the Q&A will be held in English.

Im Rahmen der Academic Freedom Week 2026 laden die Universität der Künste Berlin und die Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF in Kooperation mit dem Institut français Berlin zu einer Filmvorführung mit anschließendem Gespräch ein.
Angesichts zunehmender geopolitischer Spannungen und der Zunahme repressiver Systeme geraten zentrale Werte wie akademische Freiheit und die Aufnahme gefährdeter Wissenschaftler*innen und Künstler*innen weltweit unter Druck – auch in Europa. Der Scholars at Risk Report 2025 sowie aktuelle Daten des Academic Freedom Index (AFi) zeigen einen deutlichen globalen Rückgang akademischer Freiheit in den vergangenen Jahren.
Die Academic Freedom Week 2026 steht daher unter den Themen Schutz und (Re-)Konstruktion. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die komplexen Lebenswege von Wissenschaftler*innen und Künstler*innen, die aufgrund von Krieg, Verfolgung oder politischem Druck ihre Heimat verlassen mussten und in neuen gesellschaftlichen Kontexten einen Neuanfang wagen. Zugleich werden Strategien und Initiativen diskutiert, die akademische Freiheit auf regionaler und internationaler Ebene stärken und schützen können. Die Veranstaltungswoche fördert den Austausch über akademische Freiheit innerhalb und außerhalb akademischer Gemeinschaften mit Veranstaltungen in Berlin und Brandenburg sowie Kooperationen mit europäischen wissenschaftlichen und kulturellen Akteur*innen.
Die Hauptorganisatoren sind die Hochschulen des Scholars at Risk Berlin-Brandenburg und der Berlin University Alliance. Die teilnehmenden Hochschulen haben den vergangenen zehn Jahren zahlreiche gefährdete Wissenschaftler*innen und Künstler*innen aufgenommen. 2023 gründeten sie eine regionale Scholars at Risk Section, um Ressourcen und Expertise zu bündeln und Unterstützungs-strukturen weiter auszubauen.

Alfyia, eine lebensfrohe junge Frau im Zentralasien der 1960er Jahre, springt Fallschirm und studiert Hebammenkunde, als sie einen außergewöhnlichen Anruf aus der Zukunft erhält: Ihre Enkelin meldet sich aus dem Jahr 2022 und sorgt sich um die Sicherheit ihrer Großmutter im Kontext des russischen Angriffs auf die Ukraine. In diesem generationenübergreifenden Dialog über Zeit und Raum hinweg versucht die Enkelin, Familienerinnerungen neu zu denken, ihre eigene Identität zu hinterfragen und den Kreislauf kollektiver Traumata zu durchbrechen.

Der Film hinterfragt die Paradoxien der Erinnerungskultur im Kontext des anhaltenden Konflikts in Syrien. Er zeigt, wie staatlich errichtete Denkmäler politische Narrative festschreiben und gleichzeitig andere Erinnerungen ausblenden können. „The Non-Monument“ stellt die Frage, wie traumatische Ereignisse dokumentiert und erinnert werden können, wenn Konflikte noch andauern und keine klare historische Distanz möglich ist.
