Workshop#1: Saturday January 31, 2026. Time 5:30-6:45
Women Leading Tango: A Technique & Confidence Lab
This workshop is for women (men welcome too!) who want to explore the leading role with clarity, confidence, and ease - whether you’re just beginning or you’ve already been experimenting socially. We’ll work on the fundamentals of clean leading technique (axis, intention, rhythm, direction), but just as importantly, we’ll explore the part that often gets skipped: how to trust your instincts and lead from your musical voice.
In this class you will:
- Build grounded, organized leader technique
- Learn how to communicate intention through torso, timing, and weight
- Practice body organization so every step feels supported and unrushed
- Develop musical clarity so your partner always feels safe, guided, and inspired
- Explore essential leading vocabulary: check steps, side steps, pivots, turns, and simple combinations
This is a supportive, playful space where women get to lead freely, ask questions openly, and grow without pressure. We switch partners throughout so you get real practice with different bodies and responses.
This class also builds a foundation for the second workshop of the evening - Role Switching - where we’ll go deeper into tone, energy, and how to move between roles gracefully. If you’ve ever wanted to understand both roles more fully or make your following stronger by learning to lead, these two classes fit together beautifully.
No partner needed. All levels are welcome.
Workshop#2: Saturday January 31, 2026 Time: 7:00-8:15
Role Switching for Everyone: How to Shift Energy, Tone & Direction in the Dance
Role switching isn’t about learning twice as many steps - it’s about learning how to inhabit two different energetic states. In this workshop we’ll explore what truly distinguishes leading from following, and what it takes to move seamlessly between them.
You’ll learn:
- What makes a follow feel light, clear, and easy to lead — the essential technique most leaders never learn until they try following
- What actually creates the leading energy in tango — not moves, but becoming a single integrated body with grounded tone and a clear gravitational pull
- How to trade roles without disconnecting, using energy instead of choreography
- How to sense your partner’s tone and adjust your own so the lead naturally shifts from one body to the other
- The difference between active following and backleading, and how to feel that distinction in real time
Think of it like playing jazz: once both dancers understand the rules and the energetic grammar, the leading energy can pass back and forth effortlessly — sometimes intentionally, sometimes spontaneously — with or without changing the embrace.
We’ll use partner drills that develop sensitivity, tone awareness, weight clarity, and the subtle physical cues that make switching feel natural rather than “performed.” This class will make you a better leader and a better follower, and deepen your understanding of how tango truly works from the inside out.
Open to all genders and all levels. No partner required.
Light snacks are provided. You can also order food and join us
