A couple very good friends once suggested that if I ever hosted a deep dive into some of the books that I loved very much, that they would sign right up. I've given the idea some thought and, although there's no real "sign up," per se, I thought it would be fun, now and again, to do an occasional book club-style meeting to focus on some of the works of literature that I admire the most, yet don't enjoy as wide a readership as they deserve.
The Woman in the Dunes, by celebrated Japanese writer, Kobo Abe, combines the essence of myth, suspense and the existential novel.

After missing the last bus home following a day trip to the seashore, an amateur entomologist is offered lodging for the night at the bottom of a vast sand pit. But when he attempts to leave the next morning, he quickly discovers that the locals have other plans. Held captive with seemingly no chance of escape, he is tasked with shoveling back the ever-advancing sand dunes that threaten to destroy the village. His only companion is an odd young woman. Together their fates become intertwined as they work side by side at this Sisyphean task.
Join us on Friday night, July 17th, for an evening of good company, some good snacks, and a discussion of this understated 20th Century masterpiece of Japanese Literature. We'll have copies of The Woman in the Dunes on display and for sale in the store, but purchase is not necessary to attend. This event is free, open to the public, and will begin just after 7:00 p.m.
