About this Event
Join Wellesley College Art Department's Samara Pearlstein for a workshop on botanical illustration. We will look closely at the work on display in Rory McEwen: A New Perspective on Nature to see how McEwen constructed his meticulous, vibrant paintings. We'll discuss his intensely observational practice and how his techniques differed from more familiar ways of using watercolor. Participants will then have the opportunity to create their own botanical drawings and paintings in a guided studio mini-class. Supplies will be provided.
This workshop is $25 per person and is open to the public.
Samara Pearlstein studied art and biology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and has an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston/Tufts University. Her current work compares natural and human-made marks in the landscape, and questions what kinds of bodies have historically been allowed to own, explore, alter, mark, and inhabit the land. Her work was exhibited recently at the Mosesian Center for the Arts in Watertown, the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill, and the Sargent House Museum in Gloucester. In 2020, she received a grant from the St. Botolph Club Foundation to fund the printing of her experimental graphic novel about perception (and its failures). Misrecognitions (2021) ( is available in Wellesley’s Art Library. She is the Art Department’s Program Coordinator and Gallery Director. She also makes many images of cats. https://samarapearlstein.com
