From central Kolkata, to south Kolkata and finishing at east Kolkata. We will provide breakfast and Lunch at our appointed places during this trip.
Month of July is a very significant month for Buddhists worldwide. Why?
Because, Lord Buddha gave his first sermon at the Deer Park (Isipatana) in Sarnath in 528 BCE to his five former followers. This historic event happened after he attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya in the eighth lunar month, which falls in July.
This day of the full moon is celebrated as Asala (spelled Asalha in Sanskrit or Esala in Sri Lanka) in Buddhism by performing a highly sacred festival called Asala Puja or Dharma Day. It is one of the holiest days of the year, primarily celebrated by the Theravada (Hinayana) Buddhists of Sri Lanka, Mayanmar, Thailand and others.
Other important events associated with Asala :
1) According to Buddhist tradition, Queen Mahamaya conceived Prince Siddhartha (the future Buddha) on the night of the Asala full moon.
2) Prince Siddhartha gave up his royal, worldly life on an Asala full moon to become an ascetic and seek enlightenment.
3) Vassa (Rains Retreat): The day after the Asala full moon marks the beginning of Vassa, a three-month mandatory rainy season retreat where monks stay in one monastery to focus intensively on meditation and study.
For devout Buddhists, Asala is a day of spiritual renewal, marked by temple visits, giving offerings, meditating, and chanting.
