Threadbare jeans, a hole in your favorite jacket, a worn spot in your tote bag - all these can be the springboard for creativity. Mend your garments and accessories with simple embroidery and Sashiko stitches. Learn to do inside and outside applique and other darning techniques using the running stitch, buttonhole stitch, and simple Sashiko stitches! Even if you have never sewn before, this class is for you.
This class is for beginners. It is appropriate for teens 13 and above or children 8-12 years with an accompanying adult.
The fee for the class is $46.00.
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
A garment such as jeans, jacket, shirt (no t-shirts), etc., to be mended. If it doesn't have holes, don't worry. We can create some.
Cotton or denim fabric scraps at least 4 inches larger than the area to be mended. Kona type fabric is recommended.
Embroidery floss (6-strand type), Perlé cotton, or Sashiko thread. You will need about 4 or 5 colors. (The Lacis Museum shop carries these.)
Sashiko needles or some type of heavy, sharp needle with a large eye. Embroidery or regular sewing needles will bend or break on denim. (The Lacis Museum shop carries sashiko needles.)
Embroidery scissors — smaller ones with micro tips are the best but regular are fine. (The Lacis Museum shop has a good selection of small embroidery scissors.)
Sewing needle and sewing thread to match center circle along with pins and pincushion. Pattie recommends Clover applique pins with a white head. (The Lacis Museum shop carries some Clover pins, and some similar to the Clover applique pins — but not the Clover applique pins themselves.)
Regular old no. 2 pencil, chalk pencil, or silver pencil to mark on fabric. Make sure the pencil will be visible on your fabric.
Ruler to mark 1/4" grid. Pattie recommends an Add-a-Quarter 6" ruler (unfortunately not available at the Lacis Museum shop, though we have other rulers).
Sewing thread to use for basting and other sewing supplies
Paper and pen if you are a note taker
Recommended book: Make and Mend by Jessica Marquez
INSTRUCTOR:
Pattie has been quilting for about 15 years. She is a traditional hand-piecer and hand-quilter and travels around the Bay Area lecturing and teaching so quilters can rediscover the joys of handwork.
You can register by mail, by email ([email protected]), by phone (510-843-7290), or in the museum shop.
