Culture Connection: A Summer Evening of West African Music with Yacouba Sissoko and SIYA
QPL’s Culture Connection presents world-renowned kora master Yacouba Sissoko and SIYA, the band he founded in New York City in 1999. The quintet blends the ancient West African tradition of solo kora storytelling with the fuller sounds of contemporary instrumentation, performed largely on traditional instruments.
Yacouba leads on the kora, a 21-string instrument plucked like a harp. Historically, the kora was played solo by djelys—West African griots, or storytellers—who performed for kings, nobles, and village chiefs, passing down oral histories of social life, cultural identity, and family lineage across generations. Born into a djely griot family, Yacouba founded SIYA to carry this tradition to global audiences.
