Sophie Fiennes’ immersive film grants privileged access to the making of theatre with pioneering practitioners Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod of Cheek by Jowl.

In a derelict Gothic mansion outside London, we join eight actors — four Macbeths and four Lady Macbeths — for eleven days. Working in pairs, they investigate key scenes and soliloquies from Shakespeare’s Scottish tragedy.

But the film isn’t about the play. It offers a new vantage on acting and theatre, revealing text animated in ways more subtle, surprising, and various than even devoted theatre-goers might imagine. Within the building’s labyrinthine remains, we watch, fascinated, as actors and spaces give Shakespeare’s words infinite new lives.
