About this Event

How much do you know about privateers?Aprivateeris a privately owned ship ora sailor on that ship that a government licenses during wartime to attack and capture enemy merchant ships and supplies. They made up 96% of all ships serving the American colonies, accounted for 92% of all guns Americans had, and 92% of all ships captured! The Hunterdon County Historical Society has amongst its holdings a journal kept by John Grandin, a name familiar in Union Township and Clinton Town. Grandin served as a young surgeon on a privateer from 1782 to 1783. Highlights (and lowlights) from his observations form the basis for this presentation about life at sea onboard a privateer in the “Age of Sail". To increase public access, this journal is scanned and can be found on the Historical Society's website.
