About this Event

Enjoy an afternoon with special guests founder of BLK FLWR MRKT Kehmari Norman, and Historic Preservationist Imania Price in conversation with a poetry garden founder María Fernanda to discuss the creative and historic connections to the gardens that root and inspire us.

The focus of this event will honor the trailblazer Nannie Helen Burroughs!

Imania Price is a Historic Preservation Specialist with the District of Columbia’s State Historic Preservation Office (DC SHPO). She holds a master's degree in Historic Preservation from the University of Maryland, College Park. She focuses her work on the importance of documentation and preservation of African American historic sites in and around Washington, DC. Passionate about making history relevant and accessible, she strives to highlight underrepresented narratives and connect communities to the stories embedded in the built environment through tours, digital story mapping, and other community engagement activities.

BLK FLWR MRKT is a floral design company based in Washington, DC and founded in the budding winter of 2018 by native Washingtonian, gardener and floral artist Kehmari Norman. BLK FLWR MRKT provides floral design services for events and weddings, floral design education through workshops and training, and curates corporate gifts that bridge wellness and floristry. Some of our clients include National Women's Soccer League, Pinterest, and Groupon of many, and our work has been featured in TIME Magazine, ABC News, and more. María Fernanda (she/hers) is a poet. From Northeast DC, her work explores the intimacy of sisterhood, the anchor of intergenerational coexistence, and grief. Awarded the Norma Elia Cantú Award in Creative Writing, the Andrea Klein Willison Poetry Prize, and a Hurston/Wright Amistad Award Finalist, she has presented her poetry to audiences in Nikiti, Moscow, and Hamburg. She has appeared across the United States, such as at The National Museum of African American History and Culture, The National Gallery of Art and elsewhere. María Fernanda is the creator of seven serial programs, all of which are primarily in-person and focused on poetry. She is Callaloo fellow.
