Workshop starts at 10.00am sharp.

Arrival time 9.30am - Tea/Coffee on arrival

Lunch (light) - 1pm.

The IMPACT Research Centre and the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work have organised a mental health policy workshop with the Centre of Mental Health. The Centre for mental health is an independent charity. They take the lead in challenging injustices in policies, systems, and society, so that everyone can have better mental health. By building research evidence to create fairer mental health policy, they are pursuing equality, social justice and good mental health for all. The Centre’s strategy can be found here.


The Workshop with be run by David Woodhead and Kadra Abdinasir.


David Woodhead PhD
David Woodhead PhD is Associate Director of Research at Centre for Mental Health and a Visiting Researcher and Honorary Fellow at the Institute of Medical Humanities, Durham University. He has held senior commissioning and delivery roles in public health and adult social care and has also worked for a health service watchdog and a statutory regulator of healthcare professionals. He is a mixed methods researcher, with a specialism in working with groups, and other creative methods. His research interests include how to address the causes and impacts of trauma, especially for people from marginalised communities, and alternative approaches to offering support to people with complex needs. He has written extensively about his lived experience of mental ill health and recovery.


Kadra Abdinasir:

Kadra Abdinasir is the Associate Director for Policy at Centre for Mental Health, where she leads efforts to advance mental health equality across all stages of life. As part of her role, she oversees the team behind the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Coalition, a network of over 400 organisations hosted by the Centre. She has nearly 15 years of experience in mental health and youth policy, research and engagement. Kadra is a member of the NHS Race and Health Observatory’s mental health working group and she serves as a Trustee for FORWARD UK and Race on the Agenda.


The workshop will include such policy issues as: Mental Health Prevention, Alternatives to hospitalisation and mental health workforce issues.
