An undisputed classic of Hollywood’s golden age, Now, Voyager features Bette Davis in one of the greatest performances of her career.
Charlotte Vale (Davis) is a troubled young woman who has been subjected to years of emotional abuse at the hands of her domineering mother (Gladys Cooper). She is treated at a Vermont hospital by kindly psychiatrist Dr Jaquith (Claude Rains) but before returning home embarks on a cruise. Here she meets and falls for a married man (Paul Henreid) leading both to question whether they can ever be truly happy.
Now, Voyager stands up today as a taut psychological drama and an inspiring tale of physical and spiritual transformation. Remarkably enlightened for its time in its depiction of mental health issues and the treatment available, the film is rightly celebrated as a standout of the era.
