About this Event
This exhibition presents and celebrates the rich history of Baptist Health Doctors Hospital, from its earliest days in the post-World War II era to its current status as a beacon of healing. The hospital’s story is deeply intertwined with the growth of the Coral Gables community, evolving and adapting to meet the area’s needs.
On March 3, 1949, less than a year after construction began, Doctors Hospital opened its doors. Within the first two days, physicians delivered two babies, cared for 21 patients, and performed six operations. The community took pride in the new two-story, 98-bed, 24-bassinet building. The hospital staff was close-knit, with many members living locally and socializing together.
Doctors Hospital was the brainchild of local physicians who recognized the need for more hospital beds in Coral Gables. In the wake of World War II, the community was booming, with thousands moving south to build their post-war lives along the sunny shores of South Florida. The physicians enlisted Mary Reeder, a prominent nurse, who spearheaded the hospital’s construction and opening. Her grace, skill, and dynamic personality guided Doctors Hospital through its formative years.
In the ensuing decades, the hospital thrived despite challenges and changes, as Coral Gables and all of South Florida grew into an international metropolis. A Legacy of Caring… showcases the hospital’s journey over time, featuring original photos and primary source materials. It offers a fascinating glimpse into how a small hospital grew to serve thousands of patients and became a vital part of the community—a testament to the dedication, vision, and commitment of its employees, physicians, and leaders.
