A Famine Revisited: Reflections on the Ethiopian Famine
This is the 40th anniversary of the ‘biblical’ Ethiopian Famine of 1984-85, brought to our attention by the powerful BBC TV footage of Michael Buerk and Mohamed Amin. To mark it Joe will revisit the famine, in which he worked for Oxfam, in order to understand the complex causes of such disasters – economic, political and environmental – which drive people over the edge of destitution and into starvation. He will look at the global response to the famine and to its images; put the famine into context and ask questions about population and food supply. He will examine how climate change is already playing a part in famines and will play an increasing part in the famines of the future. And he will end by asking what our responses should be.
