How did Mennonites respond as revolutionary fervor spread throughout the American colonies? This program will present the range of responses offered by Mennonites nationally through the lens of what happened locally. This is the story of how the Franconia Mennonites navigated the many and complex issues forced upon them when America went to war for independence. The national struggle between revolutionaries and loyalists was mirrored locally with the Funkite schism—the first Mennonite division in North America—a split at its core caused by questions of loyalty. Joel Horst Nofziger will walk us through this historical conflict in context. Rob Presthus, pastor at Franconia Mennonite Church, will respond with some implications for today.
