With the focus this year on our nation’s 250th anniversary, we turn to the much-loved topic of food. Teacher and Pennsylvania German cook Alice Wolfgang claims food as one of her favorite ways to time-travel. She will share an illustrated talk on “Foods of the Revolutionary Era” at the Mennonite Heritage Center June 20, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.In this presentation, we will explore 18th century foodways by taking a look around some historic kitchens in Pennsylvania to see the German, as well as other culinary influences in this region. We also will stop by Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia to note the British and French influence. More than thirty recipes will be shared, some cases from the period, as well as others updated to the 21st century.
This is a free, in-person event. No registration is required.
Additionally, if you would like a hands-on experience, you are invited to be part of a documented local 18th century harvest dinner at the Mennonite Heritage Center on July 11, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This event requires registration, a small fee, and preparing part of the menu in advance.
