A conversation with professors Nadia Urbinati (Columbia) and Silvana Patriarca (Fordham), moderated by Iuri Moscardi.
About this Event

The talk will introduce the audience to the uniqueness and relevance of the celebration of Liberazione for Italians, showing how the ideals that motivated the Partisans in their fight during WW2 have a universal value.

(Kyriakos Tsakopoulos Professor of Political Theory at Columbia University) will explain the historical reasons behind the uniqueness of the Italian situation in 1943-45. She will show how the Partisans turned their ideals of freedom and equality with women into forms of government that inspired the Republican Constitution of 1948.

(Professor of History at Fordham University) will show the different backgrounds of the men and women who took part in the Resistenza against Nazi-Fascists, expanding its range: people from foreign countries fought side by side with Italians, moved by the same ideals.

Finally, we will underline the relevance of the people's fight for their own freedom at any time and in any country, emphasizing that liberty should never be taken for granted and that we all must stand up for what we believe is right.
