A Calm Mind and Open Heart
Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science on Living a Joyful Life
We live in a time of profound uncertainty. The pace of change, global instability, and the pressures of daily life often leave us feeling restless, overwhelmed, and disconnected. In the midst of these challenges, meditation offers a different possibility: to ground ourselves in awareness and to open to the inexhaustible power of love and compassion. Awareness helps us release the constant drive of compulsive doing and rest in the natural ease of being. Love and compassion reconnect us with a source of warmth and care that is always present, helping us relate to ourselves and others not through the lens of flaws and shortcomings, but through what is already whole and unbroken.
Over four days, this retreat will weave together guided meditations, practical teachings, and insights from cutting-edge neuroscience to show how awareness and compassion can be cultivated in everyday life. Through periods of practice, reflection, and dialogue, we will explore how these timeless qualities can help us transform the challenges we face in the 21st century into opportunities for inner exploration and self-discovery.

Dr. Cortland Dahl is a scientist, author, and long-time meditation teacher. His path has taken him from monasteries in Burma and zendos in Japan to nearly a decade in Tibetan refugee communities in Nepal and India. He holds a Ph.D. in Mind, Brain, and Contemplative Science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he studied under renowned neuroscientist Dr. Richard Davidson. Cort is the creator of the Healthy Minds Program app, the author of A Meditator’s Guide to Buddhism, co-author of Born to Flourish, and a senior teacher in the Tergar Meditation Community. He also serves as a scientist at the Center for Healthy Minds and as Executive Director of Tergar International.
Kasumi Kato is a dedicated meditation practitioner, educator, and retreat leader. Born in Japan, she began meditating as a child and has practiced under Mingyur Rinpoche’s guidance since 2011. She holds two master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin and spent nearly 20 years teaching Japanese language and culture. Kasumi has completed over a year in solitary retreat and leads retreats and workshops worldwide. She currently works as a curriculum specialist with Tergar International and oversees Tergar Japan.
Together, Cort and Kasumi bring decades of experience in meditation, education, and cross-cultural understanding, offering a unique blend of ancient wisdom and modern science.
Set in the peaceful sanctuary of the BodyWorks Yoga Studio, this four-day retreat will take place over Cayman’s long weekend (January 23–26). It’s a rare opportunity to begin the year with clarity, purpose, and a deep sense of well-being. Spaces are limited to ensure a supportive and intimate setting.
