About this Event

Since 2020, Black Family Homeschool Educators and Scholars, LLC (BFHES), led by Dr. Khadijah Z. Ali-Coleman, has presented the annual BFHES Virtual Teach-In, bringing together over 800 Black homeschooling families from around the country. Our teach-in provides homeschooling families with resources, support, and inspiration to begin or deepen their homeschool journey.

This year, Dr. Ali-Coleman welcomes parents to our annual teach-in which features informative opportunities to learn from expert homeschooling parents in various areas on subjects including:

  • Homeschooling on a College Pathway
  • Making Math Relevant
  • Teaching Practical Skills Through Nature
  • Teaching African American Art
  • Teaching History and Culture
  • Homeschooling As a Single Parent
  • Using AI Within Your Homeschooling Practice

and more!

Also, we will offer participants to purchase a heavily discounted copy of our forthcoming book, Homeschooling Black Children on a College Pathway, featuring chapters by Jason Esters, Tracie Yorke, Natalie Minor Mack, Chanita Williams, and Kendra Price, edited by Dr. Ali-Coleman.

Guest speakers include Queen Taese of Liberated Minds, Akil Parker of All That Math, Jade Weatherington of Teacher Jade, Nichelle Nelson of Warp & Weft, Amber O'Neal of Heritage Mom, authors from our forthcoming book, and more!

About Our Keynote Speaker

Keynote Guest conversationalist is seasoned educator, Cheryl Carter. Cheryl has been a home educator for her own children and others for over 20 years. Cheryl Carter is the lead instructor and founder of Collegiate Learning. Endearingly known as Professor Cheryl, she methodically targets the stop-blocks that prohibit learners from moving ahead in completing their writing projects. She is the author of an ever-growing number of titles and has been published traditionally and independently.

About BFHES

Black Family Homeschool Educators and Scholars (BFHES) is dedicated to fostering a thriving community for Black homeschooling families by bridging the gap between scholarly research and practical application. Through our innovative teach-ins, publications, and virtual platforms, we empower families with culturally relevant resources, support, and knowledge. Our mission is to create an affirming space where educators, researchers, and homeschooling parents can connect, share insights, and enhance the educational experiences of Black children. We are committed to expanding the literature on Black homeschooling and providing opportunities for professional development, community engagement, and academic excellence.

BFHES continues to engage with our community through our podcast titled, Contemporary Perspectives on Black Homeschooling and maintaining a burgeoning community of homeschool educators via Facebook. As of this writing, the group has surpassed 4000 members since its start in July 2020.

Our mission in 2020 was to provide ongoing community engagement regarding black homeschooling through (1) the publication of scholarly and trade work on the topic, and (2) the production of community events targeting black homeschool familites and entrepreneurs engaged in the practice of black homeschooling. Since January 2022, our strategic goals have pivoted, focusing on training Black parents on homeschooling best practices andyouth development theory, connecting them with resources and opportunities to optimize their homeschooling practice.

BFHES is the first US-based research and education group dedicated specifically to the topic of black family homeschooling.
