Montalvo Arts Center’s Resident Ceramist Ashley Magaña is an emerging professional contemporary ceramic artist who will teach both Adult Arts Education Summer Ceramics Series’ and our Youth Summer Ceramics Summer Camps. Born and raised in the central valley of California, Ashley Magaña delves into her artwork challenging the relationship between sculpture and functionality. Her time spent exploring mediums, crafts, and skills, Magaña found her passion in clay. It was through this medium in which she could convey her views on color, form, and overall experience between the art, the artist, and the viewer. She derives inspiration from the mid-century modern era, the modern contemporary era, and present day popular culture. Through the exploration of the most influential and functional designs of 3D objects in these eras, Magaña is able to push the boundaries and re-envision the overall aesthetic of ceramicware as determined by modern conventional standards.
