'5 from 500' No. 10 Choral Day I have chosen music which takes us from the depths of man’s inhumanity to man to the ecstasy of complete radiant light John Taverner’s O Wilhelme, Pastor bone is one of his most immediately attractive and forward-looking pieces. There are two versions of the text, and it is thought that the original was composed in honour of Cardinal Wolsey, the founder of Cardinal College Oxford, where Taverner was employed, when Thomas Wolsey fell, the College changed its name as did this motet – to Christ Church / Christe Jesu, Pastor bone. Note that the tenor part is missing from the source MSS so has to be re- constructed by an editor, which is why you will hear different versions of this piece using different editions.
Peter Philips’ Ascendit Deus is a most uplifting (pun sort of intended) and wonderful outburst of joy concluding with a marvellous Alleluia section in 3 time
Antonio Lotti’s Crucifixus – does this gorgeous masterpiece need any introduction? If you don’t know it, as soon as you hear those opening bars you will be
captivated, such scrunchy Baroque dissonances….
Anton Bruckner’s Christus Factus es – one of his great motets. Justly well-known and popular
James MacMillan’s O Radiant Dawn – the title says it all! Ecstatic music by one of our great living composers!
A true spiritual journey, I do hope this all appeals to you.
Spend the day working hard and perform these wonderful pieces for friends at 4:30pm. Oh - and enjoy some excellent refreshments!
