About this Event
Learn how to produce your own relief prints using the ancient Eastern technique of wood block carving and printing.
Carving images and designs into sheets of plywood with hand tools, you will make your own unique woodcut relief prints to take home and frame.
This course will enable you to continue to make woodcut prints at home.
You will be guided step by step by our course tutor Sam Groom.
What will I need to bring?
All materials and equipment will be provided.
You may want to bring some ideas, imagery or reference material to draw from (though not essential) inc' photos, drawings, natural forms, or other objects. High contrast, line images work best.
Please wear old clothes as printing can get messy. No sandals, heels or open toed shoes. Aprons will be provided.
You may want to bring a packed lunch and your own water bottle.
Refreshments are provided.
About the tutor
Sam Groom is a printmaker and collage artist with many years experience teaching printmaking and art. Previously a teacher and HOD of art, design and textiles in a secondary school, she has been a full time practising artist for over 11 years and has taught printmaking to a wide array of adults and children in a variety of settings. She has a BA Hons in Fine Art Sculpture, a PGCE (secondary) in Art & Design, and an MA in Arts Education.
Sam produces vibrant and bold one-off relief prints onto paper, textiles and wood, and also explores other techniques to creates collages, printed textiles and ceramics. The element of chance and surprise are an important part of Sam’s printmaking process. She loves to play with the printmaking process, working instinctively to combining techniques and build up layers of colour, shape and texture until the work feels complete.
Sam has taken part is several solo and group exhibitions and has twice won the Derbyshire Open Art printmaking prize.
About Carousel Print Studio
Carousel Print Studio is a not for profit charity based on the ground floor of Exchange Place Studios in Castlegate, Sheffield. Carousel provides printmaking workshops and facilities for creatives in Sheffield, in a bright, warm, accessible and well equipped printmaking studio.
Carousel is located on the ground floor just to the left of reception. The doors are widened for ease of access and there is an accessible toilet. If you have any questions regarding access needs please do contact us at [email protected]
