The event will take place on Thursday and Friday, November 14-15, 2024, at the University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee, in the new Atala Ballroom.
As the world experiences the warmest days in recorded human history, this conference will explore the profound and urgent impacts of a warming climate on human health, bringing together leading scientists, healthcare professionals, and community leaders to explore the intricate connections between our changing climate and public health.
This interactive conference is for the general public and will help our community make better decisions.
The conference will provide essential insights into how these historic changes are already affecting human health and what can be done to adapt.
Last year was the warmest year in over 120,000 years, and 2024 is on track to break new records. Nearly five years ago, the CAC predicted that the 1.5°C temperature rise target would be surpassed in the 2020s—a prediction that has now come true. At the conference, renowned experts will present the latest data and discuss its implications for our collective future.
The conference will kick off with a keynote address by Bob Bunting, a renowned climate scientist and CEO of the Climate Adaptation Center, who will highlight the latest research on how climate change is impacting human health. His opening presentation titled "The Heat Is On", will set the stage for a series of discussions that will delve into various aspects of this critical issue, from the rise of climate-sensitive diseases to the mental health impacts of extreme weather events.
Other notable experts who will also present include: Judy Schaechter, President of the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Judy Monroe, President and CEO of the CDC Foundation and David Altig, Executive Vice President and Chief Economic Adviser of the US Federal Reserve Bank as well as many medical professionals who are already dealing with climate impacts on human health.
Each session will also be moderated by the impactful voices of local leaders including Teri Hansen, President and CEO of the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, Dr. Kirk Voelker, Medical Director and Clinical Research of Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Anand Pallegar of CEO Dream Large, Inc and Sarasota Magazine, Jennifer Rominiecki, President and CEO of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and a CAC Climate Champion Award Winner for 2024 and Elizabeth Moore a philanthropic conservationist and a CAC Founding Director.
As the event concludes, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between climate and human health, as well as actionable insights to apply in their own work and in our community.
