The annual Highland Games honours traditional Scottish culture by: Scottish music: bagpiping, fiddling, and an outdoor concert; Scottish dancing: Highland dancing, step dancing, and Gaelic Milling frolic; Scottish sports: Scottish Heavy Events for women, men, adaptive youth, tug of war, track and field, and other athletic competitions for all ages. Gaelic language customs and traditions.
This event takes place at the location of the former Princess Colliery, where we honour our Coal mining history and heritage, which are such a large part of Cape Breton's history and Sydney Mines. All the heavyweight awards are named after the various collieries that were located here. This year's Highland Games are dedicated to two former coal miners who are well-known in the community: Chuck Porter and Walter Stewart.
