3rd ANNUAL- ADVANCING SICKLE CELL NUTRITION (ASCN) CONFERENCE.
The NHS has a clear mandate about improving the Quality of Life (QOL) of people living with long term conditions including Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD), promoting prevention, improving the patients experience of healthcare, with high priority given to reducing health inequalities for all patient groups. SCD is a marginalised genetically inherited red blood cell disorder associated with high levels of morbidity, mortality, disability and poor Quality of Life (QOL) outcomes and is considered a global public health problem according to the World Health Organisation (WHO, 2006) and United Nations (UN, 2008).
With the recent publication of the inaugural chapter on ‘Sickle cell and other haemoglobinopathies’ in the 7th Edition of the Manual of Dietetic Practice (link) sickle cell nutrition is now recognised as an emerging specialism in the profession of Dietetics. The chapter provides evidence-based guidance to support the dietetic management and care of sickle cell patients, however more research is needed to enhance the nutritional care provision available to effectively manage and treat the complex nutritional needs of sickle cell patients.
Improvements in the nutritional care provision in sickle cell disorder will go a long way in improving the health and wellbeing outcomes of this patient population. More work is needed to raise awareness of the role of nutrition as a management option in sickle cell and the conference thus seeks to address these health inequalities inherent in the lack of nutrition knowledge and service provision by focussing on the recent research projects, innovation and service evaluation and improvement initiatives to promote the integration of nutrition into sickle cell patient pathways in the NHS.
This in person conference, aims to achieve the following:
1. Provide an overview of the rationale for the nutritional management of sickle cell patients and an update on existing research trials to support the medical management in sickle cell disorder.
2. Provide key nutritional management insights, knowledge and experiences from practitioners undertaking research, innovation and improvement initiatives to close the knowledge and care gaps in patient pathways.
3. Provide updates on service evaluation projects to evaluate the prevalence, management and cost of malnutrition in sickle cell.
4. Provide insights on how to undertake service improvement projects to improve the nutritional management of sickle cell patients and integrate nutrition into sickle cell patient pathways.
5. Explore the role of innovation in improving health outcomes through the lens of a clinical entrepreneur innovating to improve care for children living with sickle cell disorder.
