30 Days to Freelance

Freelancing is an excellent way to supplement a career in creative writing and to build an audience primed to buy your book. There are countless publications and companies who are desperate for good writers and willing to pay well for those who can help them stand out. But how do you get started? This workshop will take the guesswork out of a freelance career and put bylines within reach, regardless of your level of experience. We’ll learn how to craft sellable ideas; how to write pitches that land well-paying assignments; how to carve out our own niches in industries that excites us; and how to scale writing into a sustainable living. By the end of the workshop, participants will have self-published at least one piece through platforms like Medium and Substack to establish credibility.
Open to prose writers of all levels who want to freelance as a side-gig or full-time business. This is a 4-week workshop, with a 2-hour session each week. Please prepare for approximately 2-6 hours of work between sessions, including time for your own writing.

About Your Teaching Artist

Kassondra Cloos (she/her) is the author of An Opinionated Guide to Wild London and an award-winning travel writer. She grew up in Pawtucket and recently moved back to RI after six years in London. She has an MFA in creative nonfiction from City-St. George’s, University of London, and was named 2024 Travel Writer of the Year by the British Guild of Travel Writers.

Community Access Lottery
LitArts RI offers a lottery for free admission to those who are from a community that has faced institutional barriers in the writing and publishing worlds or who lack access to resources and could not otherwise afford to attend. The lottery closes 2 weeks before each workshop, at which time entrants will be notified if they are a recipient of one of the free seats.

Health Safety Guidelines

If you have tested positive for Covid-19 within a few days of attending an event at LitArts RI, please contact Staff so we can let others know of possible exposure. We ask that you wait 14 days or until testing negative to return to the Center.

LitArts RI Refund Policy
All ticket sales are final except in the case of illness or emergency. If you are unable to make an event due to illness or other circumstances outside of your control, LitArts RI will issue a refund for the amount of the ticket (not including Eventbrite fees) as soon as we are notified.
If an event is cancelled at the discretion of the organization, we will issue refunds in the full amount (including Eventbrite fees) to all registrants.
