In 2026, we celebrate the 21st Anniversary of the declaration of Emancipation Day as a District holiday. You don't want to miss this event!
About this Event

DC Emancipation Day marks the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act on April 16, 1862, which freed over 3,000 enslaved people in Washington, D.C. It was the first major act of emancipation in the U.S., ahead of the Emancipation Proclamation.

2026 will be the 21st year of celebrating an official City holiday, featuring parades, reenactments, and cultural events honoring African American history. It’s a time to reflect on the fight for freedom and equality.
