The Digital Art and Animation program of the West Virginia University School of Art & Design will host the 2026 West Virginia Mountaineer Short Film Festival from Wednesday, March 4 to Sunday, March 8, Festival in Morgantown, West Virginia. The festival presents cutting-edge short films, animations, and digital media artworks from around the world, alongside work by WVU students and regional filmmakers. The West Virginia Mountaineer Short Film Festival is an annual international, competitive film screening showing juried works from around the world in a wide range of genres and formats including short narratives, documentaries, experimental & traditional animations, new media art, and live AV performances. Each year the festival showcases nearly 100 professionally crafted works curated around a series of thematic and genre-oriented screenings. Cash prizes are awarded in each of the festival’s competitive categories.Screenings and exhibitions will take place in the Canady Creative Arts Center and at additional venues throughout Morgantown. In addition, attendees can participate in lively, in-person Q&A sessions with participating artists and filmmakers, attend workshops and view exciting examples of contemporary new media art such as a virtual reality presentation and video installation pieces. Admission to all events and screenings is 100% free and open to the public. Established in 2010, The West Virginia Mountaineer Short Film Festival celebrates exceptional, compelling, and boundary-pushing works in film, experimental video, animation and new media art. Its primary mission is to help foster creative approaches to these genres and to expose West Virginia University students and the surrounding Morgantown community to the world of independent filmmaking and video art.
