2026 Vancouver Basho: Amateur Sumo Exhibition & Tournament

Sumo Sundays is excited to annouce our third annual amateur sumo exhibition!
With support from Powell Street Festival, our 2026 basho offers an afternoon of family-friendly sumo entertainment. Including live matches featuring men’s and gender diverse brackets (inclusive of women, non-binary and gender diverse folks) and sumo demonstrations, this event is one you won't want to miss.
Come watch competitors of all body sizes and experiences from across the region and witness the growing sumo scene in the Pacific Northwest! Last year's event sold out so be sure to grab your tickets early.
In addition to sumo: Taiko drumming with Katari Taiko, raffle tickets + Sumo Sundays merch.
Supporting Inclusive Sumo
Our event is volunteer-run. All funds raised from ticket, merch and raffle sales support event costs, with any additional funds put towards Sumo Sundays.
Sumo Sundays is a volunteer-run initiative that creates safe access to sumo wrestling in Vancouver through an all-body, all-experiences, and all-gender lens. We organize monthly classes, the annual sumo exhibition at Powell Street Festival, the basho (this event), occasional workshops with local organizations, and more.
Extra funds allow us to facilitate low-cost, low-barrier workshops and/or subsidized drop-in tickets for community members who may not typically have access to sumo in North America. This includes queer, trans, non-binary and/or gender-diverse folks, Black and/or Indigenous folks, people of the global majority, Japanese Canadian and Nikkei descendants, and women. Excess funds also allow us to maintain care of equipment, access space and more.

Registration is open! This year’s brackets include space for participants with limited experience in sumo, as well as those looking for a more competitive experience. We will also have open gender categories and categories specifically for women, non-binary and gender-diverse folks. Trans folks are welcome in all categories.
