Why “Family Reunion”?The theme of the 2026 Manatee Juneteenth Community Festival is Family Reunion.
After emancipation, many formerly enslaved African Americans searched for family members who had been separated through slavery. Parents looked for children, spouses searched for each other, and families traveled great distances hoping to reunite with loved ones.
Those reunions became powerful symbols of freedom, resilience, and hope.
Today, family reunions remain an important tradition in the African American community — a time to gather, celebrate heritage, and strengthen community bonds.
