CONTEST PHILOSOPHY

The CCC Vocal Jazz Festival is an educational, performance oriented, multi-clinic jazz festival. We strive to:

  • promote and enhance the musical art form of Jazz
  • provide an environment for sharing, acquiring knowledge, and performance
  • bring young musicians together for an inspiring and exciting musical experience

FEATURES
  • Close proximity and/or area microphones
  • Written comments, a CD, and DVD of your performance
  • One ensemble clinic
  • One rhythm section clinic
  • An opportunity to share jazz concepts and ideas with other groups and directors
  • Evening playoffs featuring daytime finalists, plus a lively concert featuring CCC's ensembles, judges, and guest artists

SIZE OF ENSEMBLE
  • For close proximity: 6-20 vocal mics
  • For area microphones: 12-40 vocalists

All participants must be in Jr. High or Middle School for the Jr. High division, or in grades 9-12 for Division I, II, III, and currently enrolled in the school they represent.

If you have more than 20 vocals in close proximity and would still like to participate, please let us know. You will be responsible for bringing additional microphones, as CCC only provides 20.

STYLE OF MUSIC

Appropriate styles include, but are not limited to: Swing, Ballads, Blues, Be-Bop, Cool School, Latin, Afro-Cuban, Jazz Waltz, Jazz Rock, Jazz Pop, and charts involving improvisation are highly recommended. Please come prepared with a minimum of 3 songs.

EQUIPMENT

We provide an acoustic grand piano, bass amp, guitar amp, and a drum set at the performance site only. If you use your own instruments, WE WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR DAMAGED EQUIPMENT!

PERFORMANCE, FINALS, AND AWARDS

Time Limit: 15-20 minutes including set-up.

Scores: There are no ties. An odd number of adjudicators will select first, second, and third place. Selections are based on daytime performance scores.

Awards: All groups are invited to come all day and stay for awards.

Outstanding Soloist Award: Certificates for Most Outstanding Vocalist and Most Outstanding Instrumentalist will be awarded. These musicians can be selected from the daytime or evening performances. The Most Outstanding Soloist and Most Outstanding Instrumentalist will receive a 2 year Talent Grant to attend CCC. Jr. High Students are not eligible for college talent grants until they enter high school.

The Spirit Award: The Spirit Award will be given to the group that demonstrates the most positive attitude while here on campus and displays an earnest willingness to learn. To be considered, your group performs with a contagious and positive spirit, is attentive and open to adjudicator feedback, and listens intently to as many groups as we can allow. We consider this award to be the highest honor of our festival. We also invite our Spirit Award winners to be part of next year’s CCC Mainstream Choir performance.

REGISTRATION

Now accepting credit cards! We're saving the trees and going paperless with online registration and payments. No worries, we will still accept checks and purchase orders with an online registration. A note if paying by check or PO: your registration is INCOMPLETE and your group WILL NOT be scheduled until we receive payment. If your payment is not received within two weeks of registration, your registration will be voided and you must begin the process again.
