2-Day Leather Training Course: From Raw Material to Finished Product

About this Event

Designed for industry professionals, particularly those sourcing or utilising leather such as designers, technologists, QA, retailers. This course combines technical knowledge with practical insights into leather quality, sustainability, and industry standards.
On Day 1, you will explore what exactly leather is, and how it has developed over millennia - including its key characteristics and how it compares to alternatives. You will examine raw material defects and how they occur, understand the structural differences between animal hides and skins and learn how these influence leather selection and product use. The day also includes an overview of the leather-making process, from tanning to finishing, alongside guidance on industry-recognised definitions and terminology.
Day 2 builds on this foundation with a focus on real-world application. This includes considering the sustainability of leather production, including its environmental and ethical implications, and gaining an understanding of restricted substance testing and global regulations. The course also covers quality assurance, 'fitness for purpose', and due diligence in product development. Finally, you will explore common leather faults and customer complaints, learning how to identify issues and prevent them in practice.
By the end of the course, you will have a strong understanding of how leather is made, how to assess its quality, and how to navigate key challenges facing the industry today.
