About this Event
Walk downtown Springfield streets with a guide and learn about a summer weekend in 1908 when violent mobs terrorized Springfield’s African American citizens. We will share stories not only of hatred and devastation but of courage and resilience in the face of concerted attack. The 1.5-mile walking tour takes a little over one hour. Meet at the Lincoln Statues on Adams Street Plaza. This is on the corner of Adams and Sixth Streets, south of the Old State Capitol and in front of the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices building.
Please note that in the case of inclement weather (including excessive heat warnings), the tour will be cancelled for guest safety.
Tours will be guided by history education interpreters from the IDNR Office of Land Management, with each tour ranging in duration from one to two hours. Reservations, which will be required, can be made here or through the IDNR website. The capacity of all experiences will be limited and follow health and safety guidelines outlined by the Illinois Department of Public Health. All tours are free, and donations in support of local historic sites will be welcomed.
