It's 1776! Join us at Union Mills to experience the difficult days preceding our nation’s independence to explore the many challenges facing our country's founding generation.
This living history weekend at the Union Mill Homestead is modeled on a 1776 recruiting event and will feature reenactors portraying civilians and soldiers. Visitors will be asked questions Americans were forced to confront at the dawn of the Revolutionary War and independence. Loyalty or rebellion? Violence or pacifism?

On June 21, 1776, the Maryland Convention unanimously resolved that it would “furnish 3405 of its militia, to form a flying camp, and to act with the militia of Pennsylvania and the Delaware government in the middle department; that is to say, from this province to New York inclusive, according to the request of the congress in their resolutions of the 3d day of this instant June.” The Flying Camp was composed of militia companies that had existed and had been drilling within the province since 1774 and were ready to answer the call to arms. These Maryland troops were rapidly organized and sent to New York to support the Continental Army that was expecting a large attack from the British Army at any time.
This event will depict a Frederick County (decades later to become Carroll County) community soon after the passage of the Maryland Convention’s resolution regarding providing troops for the Flying Camp. With this resolution, the local militia company will gather not only to muster for military exercise but also to begin their journey to Philadelphia before heading to New York to join the Continental Army. Join us throughout the day to learn about ongoing events in Maryland and North America in June 1776. Hear perspectives from soldiers and civilians, and draw your own conclusions on the state of affairs during the summer of 1776.
Ongoing throughout the day: live music by Donna Nomick in the historic house, grist mill demonstrations, visitations the military camp, historic food preparation, signing oaths of allegiance, interactions with 18th inhabitants and trades.
