Charlotte Macdonald's Ockham NZ Book Awards shortlisted Garrison World: Redcoat Soldiers in New Zealand and across the British Empire explores the period 1840s to 1870 when thousands of British soldiers lived and served in NZ. In this lecture, Macdonald draws on a lifetime of scholarship, rich archival data and personal accounts to explore the lives of men (and some women) stationed here and examines the structures, experiences and lasting legacy of military occupation on NZ.
