A sun salutation (aka: "surya namaskar") is a sequence of 12 yoga poses ("asanas") that are woven together to create consistent movement. The tradition of practicing 108 Sun Salutations is rooted in yoga's history as it is a Hindu belief that 108 is a sacred number. For example, there are 108 Hindu spiritual texts, 108 names for Hindu deities, 108 sacred points on the body in Ayurveda, 108 sacred sites in India, 108 beads on a mala necklace, and the distance between the sun and earth is roughly 108 times the sun's diameter.
Sun salutations are usually practiced to usher in the new day. However, the 108 are commonly practiced to celebrate the change in seasons or big life changes. The practice is essentially prayer in movement.
In this class, Brett and Sam will break down all 108 sun salutations into sets of 12 with breaks in between. At the start of each round, the instructor will set a specific intention to reflect on. The room will be warm, but not too hot because as our bodies will create heat as we move through many rounds.
**NOTE: YOU SHOULD REFRAIN FROM THIS PRACTICE IF....
- You have any physical injury that gets irritated from repeated movements. We suggest that if you have any shoulder pain or injury, that you step back from taking this class.
Please note that we will be doing many downward dogs and optional vinyasas. You do not need to be at an advanced level of yoga to take this class either. Modifications will be offered and highly encouraged.
Let's start out 2026 with a BANG! This class will help you ease into the new year with positive energy.
