🔊 🌊 Sea Sound Explorers
Schedule

UTC+01:00Location
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard | Portsmouth, EN
Families will experiment with a range of instruments to see, feel and hear how sound is made, discovering why some sounds are loud, others are quiet, and why sounds behave differently over water. Understanding sound in the Royal Navy is a vital aspect of life at sea. Naval forces use sound when signalling between ships and on submarines, to listening for distant vessels and navigating safely through fog.
You’ll also explore the natural sounds of the sea, from waves and wind to the clicks and calls of marine life, and compare them with the sounds created aboard historic naval ships. You’ll uncover how sailors learned to read and rely on sound long before modern technology.
