No previous experience is required to join us. The minimum age is 14 years, and the maximum weight limit is 110 kg. This will be a private group for an unforgettable experience.
This option offers a full‑day adventure: after the first group, we’ll enjoy a short walk for land‑based whale watching, then meet up with the second group for lunch together.

It was an amazing whale‑sighting season in Hermanus in 2025, with whales in abundance and very active —
Last October, when we did this group activity at the same time, we saw many whales up close. It was a true treat for the senses and definitely one for the bucket list.

Kayaking with the whales of Hermanus is an unforgettable experience, bringing you close to these gentle giants of the ocean while paddling through Walker Bay. The kayaks are stable and easy to handle, and no previous experience is required.

After the kayak trip, we’ll meet for coffee and enjoy a short, relaxing walk along one of the coastal paths. This gentle stroll offers beautiful coastal views and the chance to spot whales from land — adding a fuller dimension to the day’s experience.

Land‑based whale watching provides a unique perspective and has become an annual highlight not to be missed. Afterwards, we’ll gather for lunch in the area.

For those in the second group, you’re welcome to join us for lunch as well, sharing stories and experiences together.

📌 TYPES OF WHALES THAT CAN BE SEEN IN SEPT IN HERMANUS

Southern Right Whale

Recognizable by the callosities (calluses) on its head, a broad back without a dorsal fin, and a long, arching mouth that begins above the eye. These gentle giants often swim close to shore — so if you glimpse a looming shadow from your hotel window, it may well be real.
· Interesting fact: Adult females can weigh up to 80 tonnes. Males have the largest testicles in the animal kingdom, each weighing about 500 kg.

Best time to spot: July – November

Humpback Whale
With their distinctive body shape, long pectoral fins, and knobby head, humpbacks are curious and often approach whale‑watching boats, sometimes lingering nearby.
· Interesting fact: Males produce complex songs lasting 10–20 minutes, repeated for hours. While the exact purpose is still debated, many believe these songs are linked to mating rituals.

· Best time to spot: May – December

Bryde’s Whale
Named after John Bryde, the Norwegian consul to South Africa who helped establish Durban’s first whaling station. Medium‑sized, dark grey with a white underbelly.
· Interesting fact: They can dive to depths of 300 m and remain submerged for up to 20 minutes.
· Best time to spot: All year round
Other Sightings
Occasional encounters with Orcas add to the excitement of whale season.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I really do this? I’ve never paddled before.
Absolutely! 99% of our customers have never been in a kayak before.

How fit do I have to be?
Not very. If you can manage a one‑hour walk, you can do this. It only becomes strenuous in very windy conditions — and if it’s too windy, we don’t go out.

I’m nearly sixty. Can I do it?
Yes! Many of our guests are older. As long as you feel good and can do a one‑hour walk, you’ll be fine.

Is there a weight limit?
Yes — 110 kg is the maximum recommended weight.

What about kids?
· Generally, kids 14 years and up are fine, especially with an adult in the boat.
· Younger children need a strong adult with them, as the adult does most of the paddling.

Will I fall off?
Almost certainly not. Our kayaks are extremely stable. On average, only two people a year fall in — usually from messing around. And even then, it’s easy to get back on.

What kind of boats are they?
We use stable sit‑on‑top, self‑bailing kayaks. Beginners feel comfortable because they’re not enclosed, and if you do fall off, it’s simple to climb back on. We have five singles and five doubles, so you can paddle solo or with a partner.

What must I bring?
· Shorts & T‑shirt
· Hat & sunscreen
· Jacket for cooler days
· Barefoot or sandals (your feet will get wet!)
