Orla Barry s'avoue accro aux ovins. Elle a passé dix ans dans l'élevage de moutons et se demande encore ce qui l'a poussée à commencer, mais elle ne voudrait pas être ailleurs. Orla a vécu à Bruxelles pendant 16 ans et vit et travaille aujourd'hui dans le sud-est de l'Irlande, où elle élève un troupeau de moutons de race Lleyn. Son travail traite des tensions liées à son statut d'artiste et d'éco-agricultrice dans l'Irlande rurale. Les moutons ont ralenti sa carrière artistique, mais en même temps, s'occuper d'eux l'a énormément inspirée. Elle s'échappe de son studio en allant voir les moutons, et s'échappe des moutons en se cachant dans son studio. NOTES FROM SHEEPLAND suit Orla, une personne hors norme, qui flotte entre ces deux mondes. Il s'agit d'une réflexion sur le lien primal, poétique et imprévisible qu'elle entretient avec le monde naturel.
Orla Barry est à la fois artiste plasticienne et bergère. Elle est originaire de la côte sud de la région rurale de Wexford, où elle vit et travaille. Elle y élève un troupeau de moutons de race Lleyn, parallèlement à sa pratique artistique. Barry écrit, réalise des performances et des installations vidéo et sonores. Son travail se concentre sur le langage, écrit et parlé, ainsi que sur sa déconstruction visuelle et son déplacement. La fiction, l'auto-ethnographie et l'histoire orale sont mélangées pour réfléchir à la culture de notre déconnexion de la campagne et aux limites de l'art et du quotidien rural.
Barry joue avec la relation fracturée entre l'agriculture, le genre et le monde naturel. Mais son travail traite également de la matérialité des mots et des approches de l'écriture et de la parole afin d'accentuer cette compréhension physique et incarnée du langage en tant que forme visuelle.
CARA HOLMES
Cara Holmes est une activiste, musicienne et cinéaste queer aux multiples facettes. Son parcours artistique s'étend à divers domaines : elle a notamment joué dans des groupes post-punk queer et féministes et a effectué de nombreuses tournées en Irlande, au Royaume-Uni, en Allemagne, en Pologne et en Lituanie. En tant que monteuse et réalisatrice de films, les prouesses de Cara transparaissent dans ses œuvres acclamées. Elle a notamment réalisé le film Welcome To A Bright White Limbo, lauréat de l'IFTA (qui a reçu une mention spéciale du jury au festival du film de Tribeca en 2020 et a été projeté à HotDocs, Sheffield Doc/Fest et Aesthetica). Le premier long métrage documentaire de Cara, Notes From Sheepland, a été présenté en première internationale au Telluride Film Festival en 2023, récoltant des récompenses telles que le prix du meilleur documentaire au Dublin International Film Festival 2023 et le Pull Focus Best Irish Feature Documentary à Docs Ireland 2023. Notes from Sheepland a également été nominé pour un IFTA en 2024.
Cara a notamment monté les documentaires Housewife of The Year, Piano Dreams, Father of the Cyborgs et Lost in France. Elle a travaillé avec Screen Ireland, TG4, RTÉ, BBC et le Conseil des arts d'Irlande pour créer des œuvres qui élargissent la forme de la narration documentaire en Irlande.

Orla Barry admits she is addicted to sheep. She spent ten years sheep farming and still wonders what pushed her to start, but she wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Orla lived in Brussels for 16 years and now lives and works in the southeast of Ireland, where she raises a flock of Lleyn sheep. Her work explores the tensions tied to her dual identity as an artist and eco-farmer in rural Ireland. Sheep have slowed down her artistic career, but at the same time, caring for them has been a huge source of inspiration. She escapes from her studio by going to see the sheep, and escapes from the sheep by hiding in her studio. NOTES FROM SHEEPLAND follows Orla, an unconventional figure, drifting between these two worlds. It is a reflection on the primal, poetic, and unpredictable bond she shares with the natural world.
Orla Barry is both a visual artist and a shepherd. She is originally from the south coast of rural Wexford, where she lives and works. There, she raises a flock of Lleyn sheep alongside her artistic practice. Barry writes and creates performances, as well as video and sound installations. Her work focuses on language—both written and spoken—as well as its visual deconstruction and displacement. Fiction, auto-ethnography, and oral history are interwoven to reflect on the cultural disconnection from rural life and the boundaries between art and everyday rural existence. Barry plays with the fractured relationship between agriculture, gender, and the natural world. Her work also engages with the materiality of words and approaches to writing and speech, emphasizing a physical and embodied understanding of language as a visual form.
CARA HOLMES
Cara Holmes is a multifaceted queer activist, musician, and filmmaker. Her artistic practice spans various fields: she has performed in queer and feminist post-punk bands and toured extensively in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, and Lithuania. As an editor and director, Cara’s talent is evident in her acclaimed works. She directed Welcome To A Bright White Limbo, an IFTA-winning film (which received a Special Jury Mention at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2020 and was screened at HotDocs, Sheffield Doc/Fest, and Aesthetica). Cara’s first feature documentary, Notes From Sheepland, premiered internationally at the Telluride Film Festival in 2023, earning awards such as Best Documentary at the Dublin International Film Festival 2023 and the Pull Focus Best Irish Feature Documentary award at Docs Ireland 2023. Notes from Sheepland was also nominated for an IFTA in 2024.
Cara has also edited documentaries such as Housewife of The Year, Piano Dreams, Father of the Cyborgs, and Lost in France. She has worked with Screen Ireland, TG4, RTÉ, the BBC, and the Arts Council of Ireland to create works that expand the form of documentary storytelling in Ireland.
