Italian Language • Culture • History • Grammar • Real Conversation
In this class, we will explore the history of The Hill, St. Louis’ iconic Italian-American neighborhood, especially through the people, families, athletes, community leaders, and stories that shaped it throughout the 1900s.
This is where language becomes something you experience, not just study. ✨
We will use the history of The Hill as a bridge into:
🇮🇹 real Italian vocabulary
🇮🇹 practical grammar
🇮🇹 pronunciation
🇮🇹 sentence-building
🇮🇹 translation exercises
🇮🇹 idiomatic expressions
🇮🇹 guided conversation
🇮🇹 culture, memory, and community
And yes… in true ludendo docere style, we will imagine some of The Hill’s most memorable historical figures “sitting at the table” with us.

⚾ Yogi Berra (1925–2015)
Yankees catcher and 10-time World Series champion.
🎙️ Joe Garagiola Sr. (1926–2016)
MLB catcher, broadcaster, and TV host.
⚽ Frank Borghi (1925–2015)
Goalkeeper for the 1950 U.S. World Cup team.
⚽ Charlie Colombo (1920–1986)
U.S. men’s national soccer team player.
⚽ Gino Pariani (1928–2007)
Soccer striker for the 1950 U.S. World Cup team.
⚾ Frank Crespi (1918–1990)
First Hill resident to play for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1942 World Series.
📻 Jack Buck (1924–2002)
Legendary Cardinals broadcaster, who lived on the same block as Berra and Garagiola.
🏈 Ben Puie
Professional football player for the Cleveland Browns.
🏔️ William “Mountain Bill” Sublette
Early 1800s landowner connected to the history of the area and the naming of Hereford Street.
⛪ Bishop Joseph Rosati (1789–1843)
Influential Catholic figure in St. Louis history.
⛪ Monsignor Salvatore “Sal” Polizzi (1930–2023)
A towering figure in The Hill neighborhood, known for preserving Italian heritage, resisting urban blight, and helping keep The Hill a strong, connected community.
Father Polizzi’s work included:
• Fighting against the damage caused by Interstate 44
• Helping create a pedestrian overpass to reconnect the community
• Founding the Hill 2000 Association
• Organizing residents to protect the neighborhood’s character
• Opposing projects that threatened the integrity of The Hill
• Gaining national recognition for community development and preservation
This class will honor not only famous names, but also the deeper spirit of the neighborhood: family, food, faith, language, work, resilience, and belonging.
