About this Event
To kick off the new year, Blaues Haus's lecture series in 2026 will begin with a lighthearted event. On January 17th, we've invited Professor Tseng Chin-Chin of National Taiwan Normal University, specializing in Chinese language teaching, to discuss "cross-cultural humor" in film.
The film Thermae Romae II cleverly juxtaposes ancient Rome and modern Japan with a fantastical time-travel setting, using exaggerated yet subtle humor to present the misunderstandings, conflicts, and resonances that arise when different cultures meet. The lecture will focus on hermae Romae II as its core text, exploring how cross-cultural humor is formed in film.
Even readers who haven't seen the film can learn about its basic background and narrative features. Through Professor Tseng's interpretation, they will understand how the film uses cultural differences, perspective shifts, and everyday details to create situations that evoke a knowing smile.
In the lecture, Professor Tseng will analyze the cultural perspectives implied behind these humorous scenes: Why do we find it funny? Where does the humor come from? When different cultures are placed in the same frame, does the humor also reflect certain stereotypes or cultural imaginations?
Professor Tseng will also invite the audience to reflect on the significance of cross-cultural humor in modern society through interactive sessions. For Chinese-speaking people living in multicultural environments, humor is not just entertainment, but can also be a way to bridge gaps, understand differences, and even reflect on one's own cultural stance. Through sharing and discussing film texts, the lecture aims to provide a relaxed and open space for participants to rethink how cultural differences are viewed, interpreted, and understood.
