Starring Loras College alumnus Don Ameche, "Heaven Can Wait" (1943) is a romantic comedy about a dead playboy who tries to convince Satan that his lifetime of chasing women proves he belongs in Hell. The movie also stars Gene Tierney, and was directed by Ernst Lubitsch.
Oscar winner Don Ameche was one of the most popular movie stars of the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1908, Ameche moved to Dubuque as a student and began acting in the drama club at Columbia College, which later became Loras College. Ameche married Dubuque native Honore Prendergast in 1932, and was buried with her at Resurrection Cemetery in Asbury, Iowa in 1993.
The movie was filmed in Technicolor, and earned Academy Award nominations for Outstanding Motion Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography - Color. It is 1 hour 52 minutes long, and is not rated. Closed captioning or subtitles will be turned on.
