Mary Thornton will deliver a richly illustrated talk on GWR Volunteer Rifles: for Queen and Country.The talk will look at; the history behind the formation of Britain’s Volunteer Rifles; the practical implications for a GWR Company of men; their equipment and training and true “calling”; and the prevailing attitudes of the day towards the Rifle Volunteers, which often poked fun at such soldiering.
