Victorian Birmingham didn’t grow by accident. It was built by thousands of skilled workers, busy workshops, and a network of canals that connected the city to the world. On this tour, you’ll discover the real lives of those that forged Birmingham’s reputation as the “Workshop of the World”.
Your journey begins at The Roundhouse—a striking, crescent-shaped, 19th-century depot designed to keep Birmingham moving. Once filled with horses, carts, and engineers, it was built to shift goods around the city. Although the Visitor Centre has now closed, the tour lives on—re-established by Roundhouse Volunteers who are passionate about keeping its stories alive.
From there, take to the towpaths for a guided walk along Birmingham’s canals. Discover the waterways that were the engine of the city’s growth—carrying opportunity to its industrial heart.
Your experience finishes at the Coffin Works, where you’ll step inside a preserved Victorian manufactory and encounter the sights, sounds and processes behind Birmingham’s metal industries.

What happens on the day?
Meet your guide just outside The Roundhouse (near the gates) shortly before 1pm. You’ll be provided with a headset so you can clearly hear the tour above the bustle of the city.
The experience finishes at the Coffin Works around 3pm in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. You are welcome to stay for a drink and sweet treat at our cafe (15% discount).
