Honoring the master, generations of his disciples, and the students who keep his art alive — on the birth centenary of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.

In the early 20th century, Odissi, one of India's oldest classical dance forms, was fading. Its temple traditions were weakening; its future was uncertain. Kelucharan Mohapatra: a Gotipua dancer turned visionary guru — a master reconstructor and one of the key revivalists of Odissi-, carried the dance to stages across the world. Padma Vibhushan awardee, master performer, iconic choreographer, teacher of generations. 

2026 marks 100 years since his birth. A centenary comes once. Guruvaibhavam is how Guru Shradha, his second institution and only other institution, marks it.

This milestone performance brings the entire school to the stage: from the youngest beginners taking their first disciplined steps to mature artists dancing with full expressive depth. Together, they trace the journey of a dancer, showing how devotion, discipline, and years of training shape not just technique, but a human being.

The program features timeless choreographies by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra himself, alongside works by his son, Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, and his daughter-in-law, Guru Sujata Mohapatra: a living lineage, unfolding on one stage, in one afternoon.

From the master, to the generations of his disciples, to the present-day students: This celebration honors an unbroken, multigenerational chain bringing this beautiful art form to life. One hundred years after his birth, the tradition is not a memory. It is alive, and it is dancing.

What is Odissi? (for the curious)

If you have never seen Odissi, imagine this: the stone carvings of Odisha's ancient temples, stepping off the wall and beginning to breathe.

Odissi is built on a striking contrast. The Chouka stance is grounded and geometric, while the Tribhangi, curves sinuously in 3 bends. Crisp, rhythmic footwork drives the beat; the torso flows like water; and through abhinaya, the art of expression, dancers tell stories of devotion, love, and the divine through face, hands, and torso moving as one, every gesture shaped by the lyrics and music.
