About this Event

As an example of resilience, Kurdish cinema is hard to beat; a stateless people using cinema as a way of preserving their languages, traditions and identity in the face of enduring hostility across nations and across the world. The result is some of the most imaginative and moving films ever made, unlike anything produced in Western Europe, and this is why Sanctuary Cinema Club in collaboration with the London Kurdish Film Festival is pleased to present this day showcasing some of the best of contemporary Kurdish film.

The afternoon session starts with the film short “Ever since I have been flying”, a Kurdish man shares the events and moments that formed him in Aylin Gökmen’s uncommonly beautiful documentary. This is followed by “The Beekeeper”, the kafkaesque story of a refugee trying to follow his passion of beekeeping in Switzerland. The gentleness of resilience and true strength: a moving documentary by Mano Khalil, telling the story of a Kurdish beekeeper rebuilding his life in Europe after it’s destroyed by war in his home country. A story astonishingly without bitterness.
