About this Event
Get ready to dance Zydeco in Oakland! Join us for a weekly Zydeco dance class on Tuesdays from April 22nd to June 16th, where beginners and experienced dancers alike can learn, practice, and groove to the irresistible rhythms of Louisiana.
Each class is all-levels friendly, making it perfect whether you're stepping onto the dance floor for the first time or looking to refine your moves. We’ll cover Zydeco fundamentals, partner connection, turns, styling, and musicality - while keeping things fun, welcoming, and social.
Zydeco is a lively dance tradition that comes from the Creole communities of Southwest Louisiana, known for its driving accordion rhythms and joyful, high-energy partner dancing. It’s one of the most fun and approachable social dances out there.
Classes are taught by Sarah Travis, Executive Director of Ashkenaz in Berkeley and a dedicated Zydeco dancer who has spent the past five years dancing in both Louisiana and the Bay Area. Sarah brings a relaxed, encouraging teaching style that helps dancers build confidence as they connect with the music and culture behind the dance.
💃 What to Expect:
• Zydeco basics and footwork
• Partner connection and lead/follow technique
• Turns, styling, and dance floor flow
• Plenty of time to practice and dance
No partner required. Come solo, bring friends, and meet fellow dancers in the community.
