LOWER DECK BAR EVENT
Step back in time to the 80's with synth pop beats along with Ska, Glam Punk & Ska floor fillers from this legendary era. With the Zom Zom DJ's.
The story of Zom Zom’s
Back in 1981 two friends Mark Newsham and Andy Mac, 19 and 18 respectively, were fed up with not being allowed entry into pubs and clubs in Portsmouth due to their alternative dress sense.
Inspired by Steve Strange and co at the Blitz club in London they decided to start their own night in a small club above Martha’s in commercial Road called The Cabin. Mark christened the night the Ballroom Blitz.
At the Cabin we played the music we loved including David Bowie, 70’s punk and early electronic music (later to be described as synth pop), Unusual for the time there was no dress code on the door and we attracted an eclectic mix of punks, New Romantics and alternative kids from as far as Gosport, Fareham, Havant and Petersfield, as well as people in Portsmouth. The night was held weekly on a Thursday and proved very successful.
The night then moved to a nightclub in the Tricorn ( Granny’s) held on Fridays with a change in DJ’s to Andy Mac and Micheal Whichello ( aka Chello). This ran until late 82 early 83 if memory serves correct. Musically it retained the Cabins roots but added some Goth and Psychobilly which were popular at the time.
We then moved to a small club opposite Fratton bridge in Goldsmith Avenue called Vagabonds and experimented with projected video screening alongside the music as it was a popular art form of the time. Alas things ended there for a while.
Fast forward to July 2023 and my ( Andy Mac’s) 60th birthday party. Mark Newsham suggested we dust off the vinyl and revive the DJing. With the help of POD from PITL we practiced and played for an hour on the night supported by local band the Media( Chello was the bass player) and POD on the decks.
This reinvigorated our taste for playing vinyl in a public setting and less than 2 year later Mark Newsham and Andy Mac set up a quarterly night called Zom Zom’s playing vinyl from artists such as Depeche Mode, Devo, Magazine, Fad Gadget, Bauhaus, Japan, Psychedelic Furs, David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Gary Numan and Soft Cell. As well as early Human league and Simple Minds. To name but a few.
