An international phenomenon and the pre-eminent classical tabla virtuoso of our time, Zakir Hussain returns to New Mexico, joining forces with premier santoor maestro, Rahul Sharma, in remembrance of Rahul Sharma’s father, the legendary Hindustani musician, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who is widely acclaimed for bringing his Kashmiri folk music instrument, the santoor, to the classical concert stage. Shivkumar Sharma’s concerts with Zakir Hussain were considered among the greatest musical feasts of our time, and now, after five decades of accompanying him, Hussain is bringing their relationship forward in duet with Sharma’s son, the brilliant Rahul Sharma, who has established himself as the premier santoor maestro of his generation. Hussain’s expressive tabla drumming along with Sharma’s command of the santoor make for a stunning combination of improvisational virtuosity, and though the santoor and tabla are associated with classical Indian music, these two artists are renowned for pioneering the use of their respective instruments in contemporary formats. Widely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement, multiple Grammy award winning percussionist and sitarist Zakir Hussain’s contribution has been unique, with many historic and groundbreaking collaborations, including Shakti, Remember Shakti, Masters of Percussion, Planet Drum and Global Drum Project with Mickey Hart, Tabla Beat Science, Sangam with Charles Lloyd and Eric Harland, CrossCurrents with Dave Holland and Chris Potter, in trio with Béla Fleck and Edgar Meyer, and, more recently, with Herbie Hancock. A national treasure in his native India, he is the recipient of countless awards and honors and is the founder and president of Moment! Records, an independent record label presenting rare live concert recordings of Indian classical and world music. Hussain served as the Resident Artistic Director at SFJAZZ from 2013 until 2016 and was presented with the SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 in recognition of his “unparalleled contribution to the world of music.” Just this past February 2024, he made history, becoming the first Indian musician to win three Grammy awards in one ceremony. The torchbearer of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma’s legacy, Rahul Sharma bridges the gap between tradition and fusion, taking the 100 stringed santoor to a global audience and creating a space and sound for the instrument never heard before. He has collaborated with Grammy-winning musicians such as saxophonist Kenny G, pianist Richard Clayderman, electronica group Deep Forest and Peter Gabriel’s Real World Music, and recently garnered credit for being the first to lead the santoor in a symphony with the prestigious 50-member Capetown Philharmonic Orchestra at the Artscape Opera House in South Africa.
