About this Event
Join us for the YWCA & OCA-WI Historical Marker Celebration!
Get ready to celebrate the rich history of the YWCA and OCA-WI (Organization of Chinese Americans, Wisconsin Chapter) at our special event located at 1915 N Doctor Martin Luther King Dr. Come and learn about the significant contributions these organizations have made to our community. This in-person event promises to be a memorable occasion filled with history, culture, and community spirit. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to honor and celebrate the past as we move forward to the future!
The YWCA Southeast Wisconsin building includes the original Fred Moy Laundry site, which was in operation from 1940 to 1976 and was one of the many Chinese laundries in the Milwaukee central city. During this era, the Moy family, like other Chinese laundry families, resided upstairs at 1933 -1935 North 3rd Street where it was a place to live & play, grow up with their siblings, and help with the family laundry work. The YWCA has seamlessly integrated the Moy building into its operations, and the YWCA and OCA-WI are proud to commemorate the Milwaukee Chinese Laundry Era (1874-1984), with the installation of a Wisconsin Historical Society historical marker at 1915 North Doctor MLK Drive.
